My joie de vivre comes from seeing my students experience the joy of music-making and engaging in positive learning experiences. Music has the power to communicate the inexpressible, help us get in touch with ourselves, and connect us to something larger. As a private music teacher, I believe my role is to “awaken possibility in others” as Boston Philharmonic conductor Benjamin Zander would say.
My goal is to see that your child learns and grows through the study of music, acquiring the skills and disposition needed to enjoy music as a vehicle for enrichment, social connection and life satisfaction. With the right approach and a warm and welcoming environment, the effort and dedication required to be successful with music lessons can foster these skills.
All children have the ability to be successful with music — they need only be provided with the right conditions. With this belief, I show faith in every child, and have high but reasonable expectations. Parents and caregivers play an important role in children’s lives and are an essential part of the music education team. I believe in partnering with parents and caregivers to help students develop dedication and perseverance, as well as cognitive, social and emotional skills. Developing these characteristics leads to success in music and in any endeavor.
I enjoy positive relationships with all of my students, and appreciate each child’s uniqueness. Students are more motivated when they have some say in their learning experiences; I adjust my teaching to meet individual needs and interests. When students have the freedom to explore their own musical interpretations, they are more engaged and musically expressive. In my studio, students have input into the music we study and I welcome their musical ideas.
Students in my studio study a wide variety of music and learn the fundamentals of proper technique. While I strongly encourage performance, I do not emphasize competition. I advocate for excellence for its own sake and not as a means of social comparison. I aim to bring consistency, diligence, and warmth to my studio and hope to inspire and encourage such traits in my students.
Learning music is a life-changing journey. I feel privileged to share this journey with my wonderful students as they become productive, well-rounded citizens and musicians in their own right.
