Our son has become much more motivated to practice since starting lessons with Alison. Her approach has definitely sparked interest in our teenager who has even occasionally come home from lessons and immediately sat down to work through some of his pieces - he has more structure to his practicing and continues to explore new music all the time. We are very pleased with his progress as a musician under Alison’s teaching.

As parents of two children, we have had the privilege of experiencing Alison’s commitment, expertise, skill and support in her approach to teaching piano and voice to both our children. Alison’s desire to build on each of their individual strengths was evident in her teaching and her written instructions following each class. As parents, Alison involved us in their progress through their individual practice summary along with key areas to focus on throughout the week. We have seen how music has helped each of our children grow and develop into the young adults they are today. Both children continue to utilize the teaching techniques they received through their sessions with Alison in their current musical endeavors. Alison’s passion and her approach to teaching music were evident from the first time we met and continued throughout our 10 years of availing of her services. We have recommended Alison to other parents seeking a highly qualified, competent and encouraging music teacher for their child and will continue to share with others our positive experience with Alison’s approach to music education.

Our daughter described Alison as “patient, compassionate and meticulous.” She appreciated her “depth of knowledge of theory” which, she said, not only provided her with a “fundamental understanding” of the pieces she learned, but carried over helpfully into her other musical pursuits. In addition, she described Alison as being “supportive and encouraging” without pressuring her. In her experience, our daughter found this last quality to be particularly rare in a music teacher. With Alison, the emphasis was on the process and the love of deep learning rather than on competition which resulted in stress and tension.

My daughter Bethany has been taking lessons from Alison since she was six years old. Now, at age 15, she continues to enjoy her weekly lessons and participating in recitals and the music festival. Alison is a skilled and caring teacher. She shows a genuine interest in her students and their development. I’m very proud of what Bethany has accomplished under Alison’s instruction.

Rediscovering piano as an adult has been both a wonderful and challenging experience! I have the time to practice but I view the music with adult eyes and now understand that there are so many strategies to improve. The weekly visits with Alison present opportunities, to discuss my challenge, play for an audience — which is my personal goal to enhance and learn more as I move forward developing my ability to play. I love playing the piano. It keeps me sharp.
